Description Hamilton was established in Butte County in 1850 on the old path traveled by the Hudsen Bay Company between Sacramento and Oregon. Hamilton served as the first County Seat from 1850 until 1853 when it was moved to Bidwell Bar. This 287-page book gives information on Hamilton’s early settlers and the town’s demise in 1857 when it was determined to be part of the Fernandez Land Grant in a land dispute. The towns inhabitants were thereby squatters and forced to leave. The Hamilton Cemetery still marks the spot. The story of the lives of several inhabitants of the cemetery are covered in the book. The book also covers the story of George Lovelock, a early pioneer who arrived in Oroville, California in 1850. The town of Lovelock in Butte County was named after him. This is a well-researched history of two early Butte County towns and their founders forgotten by time.
